One of the leading figures of the Cinema Marginal Piauiense cycle, Durvalino Couto speaks about the films and about his own work, David Aguiar (1975). Durvalino Couto Filho is a journalist, advertising professional, poet, and filmmaker. He studied Journalism at the University of Brasília, worked in advertising agencies, and published books of poetry associated with the counterculture. In the 1970s, he was part of Teresina’s experimental scene and directed the Super 8 film David Aguiar (1975), which portrays the city’s marginal youth through the figure of David Aguiar, a rebellious artist regarded as the city’s first hippie. With agile editing, a free-form aesthetic, and a Pink Floyd soundtrack, the film creates an affectionate and critical portrait of Piauí’s counterculture. Durvalino also collaborated with the alternative press, including the newspaper Flor do Mal, and continued working in the cultural field as an advocate for a free, provocative, and engaged audiovisual language.
