Cinelimite presents Redenção (1959) in Focus: A Conversation with João Luiz Vieira. A tense and brooding film, Redenção draws on the visual and psychological vocabulary of film noir to explore the pressures of crime, guilt, and punishment, creating an atmosphere marked by moral unease and emotional intensity. Often cited as one of the first Brazilian films to employ a scope format, the film is also notable for its inventive use of the so called Igluscope, a homemade system designed by Roberto Pires while working in his father’s optical shop in Bahia. In this conversation, João Luiz Vieira, professor at the Federal Fluminense University and a major reference in the study of Brazilian cinema, offers a historical and aesthetic reading of the film, situating Redenção within the context of technical experimentation, industrial ambition, and cultural tension of its time, while reflecting on its lasting significance within the tradition of Brazilian genre cinema.
